Xpert BI role in OKEA’s takeover of Draugen license

OKEA was established in June 2015 with the ambitious plan to find value where others divest.

In 2018, OKEA transformed its business through a NOK 4.5 billion agreement with Shell regarding the acquisition of participating interests in the Draugen and Gjøa fields.

Following this, OKEA became the operator for the Draugen field and assumed the responsibility for a robust organization based in Kristiansund.

The Challenge

Being a non-operator and changing to become a field operator at the Norwegian continental shelf is a challenging task. When OKEA acquired the oil-producing field Draugen from Shell Norway, all ERP data needed to be transferred with the aim to meet both needs and requirements as an operator on the Norwegian continental shelf.
OKEA teamed up with our partner CEGAL that decided to use Xpert BI to build their digital information platform. Through the process, Cegal had the role of gathering OKEA’s specifications and requirements with BI Builders as a subcontractor.
When transferring data from their ERP system, Shell decided to extract the data as text files. Due to various reasons and some manual routines, the same data table was sometimes split into more files, with the varying formats and overlapping content. Good communication among all involved parts combined with an effective and flexible file processing in Xpert BI, was the key to overcoming the variety of files and formats.

The project resulted in the transfer of all relevant ERP data and the establishment of a digital information platform with data governance and the best quality. This contributed to an overall project cost for the license transfer much lower than originally budgeted from OKEA.

Long-lasting results.

Giving insight to data means sharing knowledge and enables further innovation. Since 2018, OKEA has implemented several digitalization initiatives and has now a comprehensive digital platform sourcing data from an increasing number of systems (EC, COW, Nems, NPD, OCS, Visma, Star, PIMS Risk PIMS HSE, EyeShare, and others ).
Data are visualized in a number of reports and dashboards covering multiple areas. Among the most important it’s worth mentioning:
